Important | 2026-02-19

On February 16, on the occasion of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania, the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, presented state awards for merits to Lithuania and for promoting Lithuania’s name worldwide.

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Habil. Arūnas Lukoševičius, the scientific director, founder, and long-time head of the KTU Biomedical Engineering Institute, has been awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas in recognition of his contribution to biomedical engineering science in Lithuania, the implementation of telemedicine technologies, and the development of the country’s science and innovation policy. The professor regards this recognition as a shared accomplishment of the entire Institute community, not just a personal achievement.

The professor is delighted that the award recognizes the importance of scientists working in biomedical engineering. He also notes that it acknowledges the contribution of the Biomedical Engineering Institute to the development of science and medical technology in the country, which is widely recognized abroad.

“The recently celebrated 25th anniversary of the Institute offered a perfect moment to reflect on the journey from its founding to the research and projects underway today. I felt proud to see that the Institute, which I had the privilege to help establish, has grown into a vibrant community with an expanding team. Today it educates master’s and doctoral students, leads ambitious international projects, and develops innovative solutions.
Yet what makes me most proud is not only the Institute’s impressive achievements, but the people behind them—the team whose dedication makes these results possible. A lively, creative atmosphere and a strong sense of community are what truly matter. I dedicate this award to my colleagues, especially our young researchers. May it encourage them to pursue even more ambitious goals in the future,” the professor says.

Speaking about future prospects, prof. A. Lukoševičius notes that the importance of biomedical engineering as a bridge between technology and medicine continues to grow.

“Technology is advancing at a breathtaking pace, and its achievements must continually cross that bridge into healthcare. Those of us working in biomedical engineering therefore need to remain at the forefront of technological progress, ensuring that the latest breakthroughs ultimately serve human health. Even in the routine of our daily work, we should not forget this mission. The sense that our work is needed and valued by the state should give us the strength to move forward,” the professor adds.

Our sincere congratulations and gratitude to esteemed prof. dr. habil. Arūnas Lukoševičius, Scientific Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, for his unwavering dedication to biomedical engineering, for nurturing a modern and progressive research culture in Lithuania, and for educating generations of scientists who continue this meaningful work. We wish him continued creative inspiration and an enduring belief in the ideals of the future!
