Internship Experience at KTU Biomedical Engineering Institute: PhD Student from Brno University of Technology

Important | 2025-09-11

This August, our institute was pleased to host an international trainee from Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic), PhD student Enikö Vargová, who joined the Biomedical Engineering Institute at KTU for a research internship.

The internship focused on uncertainty estimation methods for machine learning-based atrial fibrillation detection in photoplethysmography (PPG) signals. The trainee analyzed uncertainty results, contributed to the joint scientific paper “Effect of Photoplethysmogram Artifacts on Uncertainty in Atrial Fibrillation Detection” within the “QUMPHY” project, and worked with KTU’s PPG signal simulator to generate and analyze data for training machine learning models.

Reflecting on the experience, Enikö shared:

I truly appreciated the support of my supervisor, Andrius Sološenko, who made me feel very welcome. I also met some very nice people here, and I hope our paths will cross again in the future.

Outside the university, Enikö explored more of Lithuania, visiting Kaunas, Vilnius, and Klaipėda, and enjoying traditional food – especially cepelinai, which she absolutely loved.

The visit was funded under the Erasmus+ programme, offering both universities an excellent opportunity to foster long-term academic and cultural connections among students and staff. Our institute values this collaboration and looks forward to hosting future trainees from Brno University of Technology.
