  • Date: 8 May 2026
  • Time: 10:00–12:00
  • Location: Room A225, Santaka Valley, 59 K. Baršausko St., Kaunas

The lectures will be delivered in English.

Lecture topics:

  • Behind the Signals: A Personal Path and Hard-won Lessons in Biomedical Engineering

In the field of Biomedical Engineering, the path from raw data to clinical impact is rarely a straight line. This lecture begins by exploring the research ecosystem of the University of Zaragoza, specifically within the Aragon Institute of Engineering Research (I3A) and the Aragon Institute for Health Research (IIS Aragon). The speaker will present the Biomedical Signal Interpretation and Computational Simulation (BSICoS) research group, of which she is a member, and will walk through her personal journey—highlighting key projects in the field, as well as hard-won lessons and practical recommendations for navigating a career in Biomedical Engineering research.

  • Decoding the Autonomic Nervous System: Application in Monitoring Stress, Sleep, and Mental Health

Moving beyond the controlled environment of the laboratory, the future of healthcare lies in continuous, ambulatory monitoring. However, translating physiological signals into clinical insights in “hostile” real-world settings presents significant challenges due to noise and non-stationarity. This lecture explores advanced metrics for Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) analysis, emphasizing a multi-modal approach that integrates Heart Rate Variability (HRV) with other physiological signals, such as respiration among others. We will discuss robust signal processing techniques designed to handle the artifacts of daily life and the limitations of wearable technology. Finally, we will examine how these “decoded” signals are being applied to monitor stress and mental health, and provide new screening tools for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Biography

Raquel Bailón, PhD, is a Professor of Signal Theory and Communications at the University of Zaragoza, where she leads pioneering research at the intersection of engineering and clinical physiology. As a senior member of the BSICoS group (I3A) and the CIBER-BBN national center of excellence, her work focuses on transforming complex biomedical signals into evidence-based insights for clinical practice.

Prof. Bailón is an expert in non-invasive autonomic nervous system monitoring. Her research specializes in developing robust algorithms for Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis, specifically tailored for “hostile” or noisy environments. This expertise has resulted in digital health applications for stress monitoring, mental health, and cardio-respiratory diseases, utilizing both clinical-grade medical devices and different types of wearables.

She has participated in the organization of international conferences such as Computing in Cardiology (CinC) and the European Study Group on Cardiovascular Oscillations (ESGCO) meetings. She has participated in over 40 research initiatives, serving as Principal Investigator for seven national projects and leading the BSICoS group’s participation in the European IMI2 RADAR-CNS consortium. She has authored over 70 JCR-indexed journal articles, holds a registered patent, and has supervised 9 PhD theses to completion. Dr. Bailón currently coordinates the Master’s in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Zaragoza.
